Mortgage Brokers often get lumped in similar categories when it comes to providers of mortgage advise. Mortgage Brokers rightfully fight for differentiation.
I disagree with certain comments, mainly pertaining to how much one cares for their client, hours of operation and ones focus and dedication to mortgages. As a former mortgage specialist our team was hyper focused on mortgages, our customers, education and advise.
The big differentiation as far as we are concerned is the fact that mortgage brokers are licensed, have access to multiple lenders, types of lenders, a wider array of rates and more lending programs available. When we made our transition from banker to broker we loved the bank we worked with and the relationships we had and still maintain today. Different organizations will focus on different origination models to acquire mortgage business. Online channels are growing, retail locations in part are shrinking, some use in house specialists versus outsourcing to channels like the mortgage broker channel. I believe all channels have merit and each individual can determine how much effort and service they would like to provide.
The transition to the mortgage broker channel was/is a huge success for our team and that comes down to access! We now have access to more products and different types of mortgages. Different lenders within the residential markets, exposure to non-traditional lenders, exposure to commercial and private markets and more solutions to offer our growing referral networks and their clients.
Mortgage Broker vs Mortgage Specialist.
broker vs specialist: what’s the difference?
To most consumers outside of the mortgage space, the terms “mortgage broker” and “mortgage specialist” would seem interchangeable – but they aren’t. As a potential homeowner, the differences are more important than you might think.
First and foremost, it is important to understand the definition of these groups before looking at the major differences. Mortgage brokers belong to an independent firm. This allows them unique access to rates and offers from various lenders’ (banks, credit unions, private lenders and alternative options). Conversely, a mortgage specialist is employed by a single lender and works to sell that particular institution’s products.
